Piscataquis Public Health Council Meeting
July 18, 2002
Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft
Present: Renee Speh, Community Partnership Director; Susan Crippen, North Country Healthy Communities; Tom Lizotte, Mayo Regional Hospital; Jane Conroy, UMaine Cooperative Extension; Martha Herrick, Greenville co-School Health Coordinator; Sherry Gaudette, SAD 68 school nurse; Greg Leavitt, SAD 68 SHC; Robin Mayo, SAD 46 SHC.

Renee Speh opened the agenda by presenting breakdown of PPHC minigrant recipients. Grants have been distributed, and the Council has received much positive feedback and press coverage in the community as a result. The minigrant project should also get community groups thinking about undertaking similar projects in the future.

Renee presented summary sheet of PPHC workplan strategies for 2002-2003, including additional ideas generated from our June 20 meeting. Discussion ensued on additional ideas for workplan:

  • PPHC Web site, perhaps developed by youth.
  • Need for PPHC logo, consistent with HMP logo. Renee said CD&M Communications can provide guidance for logo development, and Jane Conroy said Cooperative Extension has a graphic designer who can do a logo workup.
  • One Maine grant application for substance abuse and tobacco prevention, Oct. 1 deadline for proposal for 3-year program. A coalition should apply for this, but the PPHC would need to add substance abuse to our mission statement in order to apply. It was determined that PPHC does not have the capacity to pursue this opportunity.
  • Susan Crippen reported the Piscataquis Oral Health Coalition will release its strategic plan on July 23 and there is an opportunity to connect with PPHC workplan.
  • Development of multi-media strategy to produce local health messages is in the works.

Renee presented a summary of fairs/events that PPHC will attend and present at during the summer and fall: Dover-Foxcroft Homecoming, Aug. 3; Kick Butts at Speedway 95, Aug. 10; Moosehead Forest Heritage Days/C.A. Dean Auxiliary Fair, Aug. 10; Piscataquis Valley Fair, Aug. 22-25 (PTM race car appearance on final day); Piscataquis Heritage Festival, Oct. 12-13. Staffing plans are being arranged for PPHC presence.

Renee is in the process of developing community survey tools to use in assessments, and asked for feedback on best ways to implement surveys: focus groups, on-site visits, presentations to service groups/chamber boards. Pros and cons were debated.

Miscellaneous: Members discussed merit of having local subcommittees from our area's distinct regions, and how they might fit into the PPHC's overall structure. We are building local school health advisory committees, but subcommittees in the community could help build a network throughout the PPHC service area. . .Renee explained how PPHC performance objectives connect to BoH objectives. . .Renee has prepared timeline of PPHC workplan activities.

Meeting adjourned. Next meeting: No meeting in August; Renee will email members with suggested September meeting date/time.
