Piscataquis Public Health Council Meeting
April 12, 2002
Borestone Room, Mayo Regional Hospital
Purpose: Review of contract renewal draft
Present: Renée Speh, Susan Crippen- North Country Healthy Communities, Val Heal- Penquis CAP.

The group reviewed some of the current draft workplan and suggested additions. Fruitful discussions occurred around several concepts to apply to the workplan. The key concepts were:

  • Promote activities and change as a family affair- get the whole family involved.
  • Bring the community together for events- socializing and building capacity of the communities.
  • Reach people through things that they can relate to and enjoy.
  • Promote local history and heritage- building connection to community and capacity.
  • Combine PPHC efforts with local initiatives that already happen (fairs, programs, concerts…).
  • Build connection between law enforcement and community, particularly youth.
  • Provide mentoring opportunities for youth.

The group discussed initiatives that are already happening in communities that could be incorporated into next year's work plan. The group discussed various ways of achieving the work plan's goals, numerous additional strategies, and came up with key contact people for some initiatives. The potential involvement of youth in many efforts was discussed.

Several of the strategies discussed today use the concept that Don Siviski explained in yesterday's meeting: learning what people's perception is about a problem and getting the message to them through their interests. For example, bring a well-known comedian, who weaves an anti-tobacco message into his routine, to perform for the community at a fun celebration.

The group discussed developing a local version of National Smokeout Day. Perhaps have a monthly day of no smoking in the county, following it with an evening celebration that includes a community supper and dance, concert, etc. Rotate the celebrations to be present in towns throughout the region.

Val and Susan mentioned the importance of measuring performance by using indicators and objectives that are easily tracked. The group also discussed social marketing methods to get messages out gently and widely.

Minutes respectfully submitted by Renée Speh
