Laboratory Department
Mayo Regional Hospital's Laboratory Department, located on the hospital's first
floor, analyzes patient specimens to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment
of patients. The lab is accredited by the Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation.
Common lab procedures include cholesterol tests, complete blood counts, a variety of chemical panels, and drug and alcohol screens. The laboratory includes a blood bank for patients who may require blood transfusions during their hospital stay.
Laboratory testing is performed on inpatients, outpatients, specimens collected at physician offices, specimens collected at home health agencies and specimens collected at nursing and boarding homes.
Laboratory in-house staffing is 24 hours per day, seven days a week. The lab employs a total of 14 medical lab technicians and medical technologists. There are usually six lab techs on duty from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Mayo's Laboratory also staffs weekly blood draws at satellite locations at Dexter Internal Medicine and Milo Family Practice as a convenience for patients in those communities.
