Thursday, September 20, 2007
Richard Evans DOVER-FOXCROFT - Richard Evans, M.D. was honored by the Maine Medical Association earlier this month when he received its President's Award for Distinguished Service at the annual session in Bar Harbor. The award is given to those who contribute in significant ways to the Association and its mission.

Dr. Evans, a general surgeon in private practice in Dover-Foxcroft and a member of Mayo Regional Hospital's medical staff since 2003, has long been an active member of the MMA.

He served as a member of the association's Executive Committee starting in 1996, and chaired the committee in 1999-2000 before moving up to MMA President in 2001-2002. Since then, Dr. Evans has been one of two Maine Medical Association delegates to the American Medical Association. He also is editor of "Maine Medicine," the MMA's bi-monthly newsletter sent to 4,000 physicians and practice managers.

In presenting the award, MMA President Kevin Flanagan, M.D., called Dr. Evans "a strong articulate voice for medicine, and yet an unsung quiet leader in many ways as well. For me he has served as a role model, mentor and one of those rare individuals whom I and many others seek to emulate."

Dr. Evans received his B.S. in microbiology from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. After completing his general surgery residency in 1980, he began a 13-year surgical career in the U.S. Air Force, with postings in Maine, Nebraska, South Dakota and Missouri.

Prior to joining Mayo's medical staff, he was a general surgeon for 10 years at Downeast Community Hospital in Machias, where he also served as medical staff president and a member of the hospital's Board of Trustees.
